Rosemary Aubert is back with the sixth novel in her award-winning Ellis Portal mystery series. Fans of the earlier Portal books will welcome the chance to reconnect with an old friend. Newcomers to Aubert's fiction will enjoy meeting her cast of well-rounded characters and savouring a page-turning storyline. One of the best things about the Portal mysteries is their great sense of place. Aubert gives her readers a clear sense of Toronto, in particular the Don Valley wilderness preserve that runs throught the city. Don't Forget You Love Me is a winner all round!
Ellis Portal, former judge and once living among the homeless in Toronto, has made a promise to Queenie, his dying wife Find who murdered The Juicer.
And so begins Portal’s quest which brings him back to the world of homelessness along with its secrets and fears. Through Portal’s memories, Aubert brings to life the everyday realities of being homeless.
“I remembered the preparations we used to make on the street and in the valley for the coming winter. I had now lived in a proper apartment long enough to have forgotten a lot of the scrambling for cardboard and plastic and discarded cloth that had filled our October and early November days.”
Ellis Portal’s dignity and moral depth make him a lovable character. One you can trust as does Kezia, a young adolescent who brings to the story the dimension of living in fear and being bullied by her gang member brothers.
Aubert is not afraid to tackle hot social issues police brutality, homelessness and gangs.
The writing is impeccable. Not surprising from an author who’s published three poetry books..
Don't Forget You Love Me is a well told story of justice and a reminder that class has nothing to do with love and grief.
