Pirogoeth and Largo, a former ruler of a small domain and mage of great power and a hard bitten legionnaire and leader of men, are unlikely travel companions. Once bitter enemies, they flee the advance of undead zombie hordes that destroy the very land itself.

When a mysterious knight-errant named Moh joins their quest it is evident that his game involves more than just aiding them in their quest to find the source of the corruption and collapse of their world. While skilled in both sword and spell, his greatest challenge is not sudden attacks by undead knights or BalloonBears but finding a way through Pirogoeth’s icy exterior to the heart he knows is there.

"Behind the Masque" is a short story based on a fantasy MMORPG played by characters in the online webcomic/manga Megatokyo. This is the first in a series of short stories and light novels telling the Endgames story from the point of view of the characters in the game. Also includes several new illustrations by Fred Gallagher for this story.

Behind the Masque A Megatokyo Endgames short story eBook Fred Gallagher Thomas Knapp

The story behind Miho's betrayal of Piro, the catalyzing event that drove both Piro and Largo to E3 in search of a new game only to find themselves on a plane headed for Tokyo.

If you're familiar with the Megatokyo webcomic this short story will fill in a few blanks and add depth to a long-running subplot that has shaped the overall narrative in countless tiny ways. If you're not familiar with the Megatokyo webcomic you'll find a captivating fantasy story about a powerful mage driven from her home, a n'er-do-well itinerant knight who falls in with her, and a backstabbing noble for whom deception and betrayal are part and parcel of life itself.

There are no cosmic deities here and no damsels in distress, just a pair of wacky characters who find themselves caught up in something far larger than they can hope to comprehend and very nearly pay for it with their lives.

Behind the Masque A Megatokyo Endgames short story eBook Fred Gallagher Thomas Knapp Reviews

And I'm not disappointed. Fred Gallagher continues to amuse me. I haven't read Megatokyo in a long time and this made me want to get my volumes out and enjoy them again.
I've been reading the comic Megatokyo for about four years now and have always wanted more of the Endgames story, since it was first touched upon in the comic. Finally, we who love Pirogeth and Largo, and their MMORPG adventures are getting the story we've been waiting so long for.

We finally get to see how Pirogeth and Largo met Moh and what happened to tear their world apart and help set the stage for much of what has been going on in the world of Megatokyo for the past eight or nine chapters. Some of what happened in the game has been told and alluded to in Chapter 10 of the comic, but not it looks like we will be told...probably almost everything. I'm sure Fred will keep some secrets from us, as he usually does.

The illustrations that are included are terrific and meet Fred's usual level of perfection and attractiveness. Granted the cover picture is not actually in the book, but how often are cover illustrations actually in their books? Besides, it's beautiful.

If you like Megatokyo at all, and have been wondering what happened during the Endgames saga, pick up this story to start finding out.
This story is short but very nice. The illustrations help a lot in setting the tone. This story was originally part of the online web comic MegaTokyo as a MMO played by the characters in the comic. The events predate the web comic but directly tie into the storyline because of the actions of the characters playing the game. As a fan of the comic I highly recommend this story and I urge you to check out the web site and read through the archives. Or better yet buy the books, they are worth the price!
Always enjoy following this story, check out his web strip for the background and up to date info on all your characters at MEGATOKYO
After following MegaTokyo for years, I absolutely loved being able to finally getting to read part of the story behind so many of the events that have taken place in the comic. Thomas Knapp did a very good job of bringing this story to life in a way that complimented the comic, even without pictures, and left me anxiously awaiting more. (I loved reading about the whole sparkle bunny drama, and it followed and complimented the comic version of the same scene so well, I was laughing so hard I couldn't see to read!)

As far as the price goes, I think 99 cents is just right. Fred pours so much of himself into the series, it is good be able to support his efforts, even in this little way.

I hope that the MegaTokyo volumes might be released for the eventually, but in the meantime, I'm looking forward to the other EndGames stories. (Hopefully one of them will be a prequel that shows the battle that brought Pirogoeth and Largo together, and what made them set aside their differences and team up.
the first in a series, obviously getting footing and not the best entry by far.
For the price it's worth it but i suggest starting with the first actual book and determining story quality based off of that.
glad i bought it though.
I was well pleased with the chance to get a bit more Megatokyo-related information, and also pay Fred back for the years of entertainment he's given me. 99 cents (plus tax...) for 24 pages might seem like a lot, but it really isn't, and after having seen the Endgames interludes in the novels, and reading about Largo and sparkle-bunnies, it was quite easy to meld into the world of Endgames.

The short story could easily be fleshed out even more, but seeing what had previously been an "off-screen" interaction between Moh and Pirogoeth was fascinating, and adds even more flavor to the Megatokyo interaction between Miho and Piro.

So... More please?
