J.C. Daniels is the pen name of author Shiloh Walker. J.C./Shiloh has been writing since she was a kid... she fell in love with vampires with the book Bunnicula and has worked her way up to the more...ah... serious vampire stories. She loves reading and writing anything paranormal, anything fantasy, but most all anything romantic. Once upon a time, she worked as a nurse, but now she writes full time and lives with her family in the Midwest.

My Review:I'll admit that when I sat down to read this book, I pulled the three previous books in this series off the shelf just to remind myself about where the characters were in the story arc. And suddenly I remember why this series is one of my all-time favorites. It's just so good. I swear no one writes emotion as well as J.C. Daniels...which is saying something because her main character, Kit, is NOT an emotional person. She keeps everything hidden and inside...and that's heartbreaking. I swear I ugly cry in all of these books at some point. (And I should have known better, but for this one, I was reading that part in the school pick-up line and losing it...seriously.)
Okay, on to the nitty-gritty about this book. Sigh...Damon and Kit. Finally some healing happening there. I love them together so much. He is so alpha and protective and she is so independent and strong. It's hard for them to mesh, but they do...and it's so gorgeous the respect and love there is between them...even when it's hard. I love that and I love their relationship and all the layers to it. I never thought they would recover from book #2, but it's been beautiful (and heart-wrenching) to watch their journey back to one another. This book gets 5 *s for that alone.
But there's so much more going on and I loved that just as well. There are non-humans disappearing and Justin is investigating. He pulls Kit into that investigation with him. There were some interesting twists in this one and one particular shocker at the end which will play out in other books. But...whoa, I did not see that coming.
One of the things that makes this series so outstanding is the side characters and there were two in this one that rocked...
*Justin. My heart breaks for him. At the same time, I love him so much. He's an incredibly strong character and loves Kit. He harbors the same guilt that Damon does over what happened to her. There are some wonderfully poignant between the two of them in this one and I liked getting to see deeper into their relationship.
*Abraham. Wow. I like him and want to know more. He's a new character in this book and a vampire. There's definitely more to his story with just the reactions Kit has soul-deep to him. I'm intrigued and can't wait to see where that line goes.
*Doyle. I mention him here, just because I missed him in this book. Don't get me wrong, he was in it, but definitely just in the background. After the bombshell about him in the last book, I wanted and expected more with his character in this one. Something still to look forward to.
Note...while you could read these books as stand-alone (I think the author does a good job of explaining the backstory so you wouldn't be lost), I personally think you'd be doing yourself and the books a disservice by doing so. I highly recommend you start at the beginning and then devour them all. They are ALL excellent, amazing, heart-rending, gorgeous stories.

Edged Blade The Colbana Files Volume 4 JC Daniels 9780989460569 Books Reviews
This bonus novella? doesn't even feel like it was written by J.C. Daniels or even like a full book. It is lacking in the originality, depth, clarity, and edgy/dark elements present in the prior work. It reads more like a reader's digest version of Kit Colbana in an almost one-dimensional storyline that doesn't ever really grab you. Low-rating reviews have mentioned poor editing, lack of continuity, and choppiness. If one takes it as a scaled down, posterized 1D Kit Colbana 'bonus' novella, that might explain why Kit is suddenly 4 inches shorter here than in previous volumes, and why the setup for Kit to hunt down the shifter who hurt T.J. was completely abandoned or ignored. I really really liked books 1-3, and was anticipating this one quite a lot. While I read the previous volumes in the series nonstop in one sitting, I put down "Edged Blade" several times in frustration after having to reread pages several times to figure out what exactly had happened and why Kit was behaving like a cardboard version of herself in which her once razor-sharp, shining blades and steel awareness and perception are dull and lackluster. There is NO edge to this blade.
I loved the first 3 books of this series, but this one not so much. Let me start by saying I HATE cliffhangers. Daniels used one before - in book 2 - but at least she'd completed the story before she left us hanging. This time the story just stops, right in the middle. Beyond that, the first several chapters have absolutely nothing to do with the rest of the book. So basically she's given us part of a book.
As far as the plot itself goes, it's ok (if incomplete), but the characters don't develop at all, and I'm getting pretty tired of Kit Colbana, the only female character worth a damn, surrounded by males who love and admire her. I don't know why a woman writer is so reluctant to allow her female lead to have women friends, but in Daniels' world women who can fight are either terribly annoying or downright evil (excepting always Kit, the wonder woman). Kit's no Mary Sue - she's definitely failed at things, which is one of the elements that made Books 2 & 3 so engrossing - but in this book she feels flat and uninteresting. Daniels should take a lead from Ilona Andrews on how to allow her main character to shine even among other kick-ass female characters.
It seems as if Daniels is attempting to string this series along. Instead of dealing with the aneira world that was so tantalizingly held out to us in books 1-3, she's gone in a completely new direction, and if this cliffhanger is anything to go by, she plans to use the new storyline in a multi-book arc. But I don't want the new arc yet - I want to understand aneira. This book was really disappointing.
